Leaving California
- Book early. Popular routes fill up, especially in summer and at month-end. Ask several movers for written estimates at least six to eight weeks before your date.
- Access and parking. Hillside homes, narrow streets and apartment complexes can make it hard to park a large truck. Mention access issues during the survey so they are in the estimate.
- Weight matters. Interstate moves are usually priced on weight. Decide what to sell or donate before you request estimates.
Arriving in Texas
- Heat. Summer heat in Texas can damage electronics, medicines and candles in a closed trailer. Carry sensitive items with you.
- Vehicles and driver's licenses. New residents must register vehicles and get a Texas driver's license within set deadlines. Check the current rules with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
- Delivery window. Get the delivery window in writing, and ask whether the price includes storage if your new home is not ready.
Before you book a mover for this move
- Check the mover's federal registration. A move from California to Texas crosses state lines, so the mover must be registered with the FMCSA. Here is how to check.
- Get at least three written estimates, each based on a survey of your belongings, in person or by video.
- Compare the same estimate type. Learn the difference between binding and non-binding estimates.
- Choose your liability coverage on purpose. Released Value pays at most 60 cents per pound per article.
- Know the warning signs. Read our list of moving scam red flags before you pay any deposit.
